GALAXY LCX COMMERCIAL SPIRAL STAIRCASE

Design Brief

ID Staircases were approached by our customer who was seeking to open a Hair Dressing Salon in Exeter.

The brief was to come up with a modern and attractive staircase solution that would compliment the design plans for the rest of the shop fittings and also to provide access from the ground floor reception to the first floor salon area.

A spiral staircase was the only practical solution given the available floor area on each floor.

It was very important to create a modern and attractive reception area that was in keeping with the ethos of the hair dressing salon.

The staircase would need to take more than one person at a time that may need to cross at the mid point if travelling in different directions.

Limited directions from which the Galaxy LCX spiral staircase could be accessed from each floor limited the options for the final shape of the staircase.

Materials Selection

Steel - Although powder coated mild steel was contemplated due to the cost benefits both ID Staircases and the customer agreed that brushed stainless steel would not only compliment other fixtures in the shop but would also provide the stylish contemporary feel.

The Treads of this GALAXY LCX spiral staircase were made from engineered European Oak. This provided a rich and attractive grain pattern. The treads were stained to Dark Walnut. This colour was selected to match the fittings in the salon.

Balustrade was constructed using solid 22 mm stainless steel spindles for strength. This ensured a strong construction that would be safe for all users including children.

Handrail - Although a steel handrail was considered for this project, it was decided that not only would a oak handrail help 'tie in' the staircase visually with its surrounding it would also be warmer to the touch. Lastly an oak handrail would create more of a feeling of high quality which was in keeping with the rest of the project.

Building Regulations

There were a number of considerations regarding the choice and design of the staircases for the Saks project and compliance with building regulations.  We were asked to supply drawings of the proposed project and photographs of similar staircases to satisfy the criteria for suitability for use as a semi public staircase.  Expected usage of the staircase was considered for us to ensure dimensions were adequate to comply with British Standards for a Spiral or Helical Staircase. The Staircase was designated as a Category 'D' staircase which enabled us to plan accordingly and ensure compliance. The staircase was approved during the design stage and before we began the manufacture process. A landing platform halfway up the staircase was added to ensure that there were no more than 16 risers without a place to pass or rest.

Note; All staircases can be designed and constructed to comply with all UK building regulations and satisfy all british standards categories for both domestic and commercial staircases. The responsibility for adherence to building regulation lies with the customer and not ID Staircases therefore we strongly recommend that you submit all plans to building control in your area for approval.
